Sebastian, 6, is starting first grade at Peabody Elementary in Dallas. He is really looking forward to art class — he and his younger siblings love to draw.
Sebastian, his younger sister, Ximena, 3, and brother, Diego, 1, are picking up fresh foods with their mom at Peabody’s school pantry. Sebastian has an eye out for apples — he loves when his mom slices them up and serves them with peanut butter.
Maria, the kids’ caring mother, smiles wide when she talks about the variety of items available at the pantry. She found out about it through a flyer at the school and loves being able to take home the nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables her kids love.
Healthy items like fresh produce are often out of Maria’s budget when she visits the supermarket. Her husband works hard to provide for the family while Maria cares for Ximena and Diego. With just one income, the couple was having a hard time affording nutritious food.
The Peabody school pantry means they can fill their family’s table with balanced meals rather than cheap boxed dinners, which are often high in sodium and fat.
Sebastian wants to be a teacher when he grows up, and thanks to your partnership, he has access to the healthy food he needs to focus this fall.
His mom could not be more grateful. As we ask her if she’d like to say anything, her face lights up. “Thank you for the investment!” she says with enthusiasm.
